On May 15,1947, my father, Private George Wesley Edward, Company G, Eighth Infantry, was awarded a CITATION for Meritorious Service by the grateful Citizens of the State of Illinois for "having served patriotically and faithfully in the Illinois Reserve Militia during World War II." The citation was signed by Governor Dwight H. Green. I wish I knew more about this Infantry and who served in it with my father. Was it all Black? Did my father endure racist treatment in spite of his service? Did his White counterparts receive the same paper citation? Apparently, the Army had already lost his "s." I wonder what the REAL facts are ... beyond "D-Day." Never thought about it before. History feels different when you know you have a palpable connection to it.
